The Canyon PSA GU-11s managed a split over the weekend with a win over North County Pacific Boca and a loss to the Fullerton Rangers. Saturday’s game at Fullerton was a hard-fought contest against equally matched opponents.
The PSA girls missed on a couple of great opportunities that would have led to a tie score. The Rangers capitalized on their chances, including a very nice header for the first goal.
PSA keeper Haley Baca had 7 saves in this game to keep the score close. Headers were had by Peyton Lott (5), Makenna Lu (3), Danielle Leavelle (2), Mikey Garcia (1), and Jade Poling (1).
Sunday found the girls facing a much-improved NC Boca squad. First-half highlights included numerous crosses by Lott and very strong defense by Garcia, Poling and Lu.
Late in the first half Marisa Esparza sent a nice pass from inside the 18 yard line Lott who sent a high-arching shot over the keeper's outstretched hands for the only goal of the half.
The Boca coach made some excellent adjustments during the break and the Boca squad swarmed searching for an equalizer. Strong defense by Baca with 6 saves and Garcia staved of these attacks.
A late insurance goal was added by Kyla Torres who sent a nice cross in from the right wing which was deflected in by a Boca defender.
PSA headers in this game were made by Lu (4), Poling (3), Leavelle (2), Lott (2), Torres (1), Khalea Thompson (1), Ashley Maron (1), and Emily Rodriguez (1).
Marisa Esparza assisted the game-winning goal against NCP Boca.
