Enthusiastic Brian Warman is Canyon PSA's president and coach of the club's energetic group of GU-9 Blue players. His squad went into this weekend placed third in the Bronze Omega standings but defeated NHB FC Black Saturday, 3-1, to improve to 7-1-2 on the season and move into second place. The ladies have tallied a whopping 36 goals while a stingy defense has only given up eight--among the fewest in the division.
For Warman and his family, soccer is a lifestyle (Warman's got a licence place frame that says 'Soccer Family 24/7'). Here's some more on Warman, who sat down with XK OC Soccer News to answer a few questions about himself, his family and his love for the game:
His childhood idol:
PelÄ—
Who is the best player ever?
“Now, there’s so many to watch. I enjoy watching Cristiano Ronaldo and a lot of the Brazilians like Ronaldinho.” The king of football, Edison Arantes do Nascimento (PelÄ—), still ranks as Warman's favorite.
Traveling as a youth
As an under-12 player Warman got the chance to travel all across North America and played in more than100 games. His team played in Toronto, Canada twice, Mexico City, Texas, and New York. “That whole year was just awesome,” he said.
Why did he get into coaching?
“I actually started coaching with my dad when I was 16 with my younger sister. And then I started having kids myself,” he said. Warman has three children: 15-year-old son Tyler (who has been a soccer referee for four years), and two daughters, 13-year-old Megan who plays for PSA's GU-13s and Jessica who is a member of Warman's GU-9 Blue team.
What is the number one thing you look for in your players during training?
“I would say attitude. If you have the right attitude and you’re willing to work hard, especially at this age… It’s amazing; you can do so much with these kids."
"We have a good group of girls and I’ve had them now for a couple of years. You’re able to show them and teach them so much, it’s great!”
What do you enjoy most outside of soccer?
"What do you mean?” Warman jokes. “Spending time with my family” is a top priority of his. Soccer has proven an excellent way to do just that for Warman.
He has coached all his kids and admits that soccer truly is a family affair. “My dad is my assistant coach, and my wife has been team mom for years.”
Who will win the World Cup next summer?
"I’m hoping big time for the USA, but I enjoy watching the Brazilians." |
