Canyon PSA's GU-14s traveled to Coronado the weekend of Aug. 1, coming away with a record four wins, one tie and the Crown City Classic tournament title.
On Saturday, the girls began with a closely fought game against North Irvine SC White. Rianna Goins scored the lone goal and the PSA defense held their opponents. In the second game of the afternoon, PSA defeated tournament host team Nado Select, 2-1, with the help of two goals from Maegan Lott.
Sunday’s games included a 0-0 tie against Chula Vista Pumas Gold, advancing PSA to the semifinals against Arizona’s SanTan Legacy. High-pressure offense triggered by Meg Rogers and Maddie Beavers resulted in a 1-0 win (goal courtesy of Beavers) and a spot in the championship game.
The team re-grouped for an hour in the shade and then played North Irvine SC White in the final match. North Irvine came out looking to avenge their Saturday loss and scored the first goal early.
PSA battled back with a game-tying goal from Lott off a free-kick assist from Paige Railey. The game ended in a tie and went straight to penalty kicks. The PSA girls capped the long weekend by putting in six PKs to North Irvine’s five.
Rachel Brown had the game-winner, while goalkeeper Kaycee Morgan was credited two outstanding saves.
Smith, Brown, Chloe Hamilton, Railey, Jenna Fink, and Morgan provided solid defense the entire weekend, allowing only two goals in five games. |
