SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - Jacquelyn Hubbard scored four goals while Stephanie Madrigal, Christina Tuer and Jackie Tanner added one each to lead Costa Mesa United GU-13 -- an AYSO-Plus team -- to the title in the inaugural South County Premier Cup.
In pool play, Costa Mesa beat CFC United, 1-0, Mission Viejo SC Elite, 1-0, and Scripps Ranch United, 2-1.
In the championship game, Costa Mesa downed the Gold Coast X-treme Stars, 3-1, with Hubbard scoring twice and Tanner the other goal.
In the shutout of CFC, Claudia Huerta and Brooke Donnelly split time in goal for the shutout. Donnelly teamed Marlene Calderon in goal for the shutout against Mission Viejo.
Gold Coast X-treme scored its only goal with under a minute left denying Costa Mesa a third whitewashing in the tournament.
“I call all of them my band-aid brigade,” coach Walter Tuer said. “We haven’t had a full-time keeper in two years.”
Emily Grady, Emily Gruber and Carly Dixon anchored the defense. The team was successful last fall in the Tournament of Champions when it made it to the championship game before falling to San Diego Surf.
The team will play in the RSM Summer Classic this weekend and opens play Saturday at 1:20 p.m. at JSerra High School.
The team will hope to have striker Alondra Novoa back, but she injured a knee in the championship game against Gold Coast and might have to sit out the tournament. |
