TEMECULA – Andrew Mitrache had a goal and an assist to help lead the Canyon PSA BU-10 team to a 2-1 win over North County FC in its first game of State Cup play this weekend.
Mitrache set up Lucas Everett with a pass in the middle of the field, and Everett finished the play to give Canyon a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Mitrache played most of the game at sweeper, but came up early in the second half to take a free kick awarded to PSA when Everett drew a foul 25 yards from the goal. Mitrache came on and slammed a shot over the North County goalie to give his team a 2-0 lead.
North County made a valiant comeback, cutting the lead to 2-1 late in the game, but Canyon goalie Travis Emenaker came up with a number of key stops late in the game to preserve the victory.
PSA looked good the rest of the weekend, but couldn’t break through the win column in its final two games. Canyon lost a tough 1-0 decision to Arsenal FC in Saturday’s second game before closing out the weekend against South Bay Force Blue on Sunday.
